Majella Grainger

The Victoria University Community Garden was officially launched by Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor John McCallum on Thursday May 31.
In late 2006, VU allocated a vacant 14 metre x 48 metre block of land at 115 Albert St, Footscray to the Community Garden program which will involve students aged 16 to 55 who are re-engaging in education in the development and maintenance of a sustainable community garden. The program was successful in applying for a 2006-07 Office for Industry and Community Engagement Seeding Grant, which enabled the project officer to liaise with businesses and organizations that assisted in establishing the garden.
Majella Grainger, teacher from the School of General Education Programs and Services, said "We are very pleased that this horticulture project has grown from its beginnings as a small vegetable patch. What is now a large scale garden will enable the students to learn skills in a real workplace situation? These skills include planning and organizing, communicating ideas and information, team work, designing and making, problem solving and using technology."
"Environmental education is essential to the project and includes sustainable gardening practices such as being water wise, crop rotation, recycling garden waste and worm farms. The practical focus of the Community Garden offers a rich and meaningful learning experience for the students involved."
