Personal Statement
It’s my honor to choose Mcgill University as a university I apply for. For several reasons I consider that Mcgill University is the place to spend my next 4 years at. I have been dreaming invariably about entering a university where I can read its long history, and enjoy its old beautiful campus. Seeing The beautiful pictures of Mcgill University, I was absorbed by the structures in the style of neoclassical companying with the modernization of Montreal. The school of Architecture at Mcgill University is located in Downtown Campus, creating an open atmosphere which is important in the field of architecture I think. The first time I heard about the school of Architecture was in an introduction of its first director, Stewart Henbest Capper, the designer of a fairy-like building “Ramsay Gardens”. I’m full of exception to study in this school founded by one of my favorite architects.
Burn in a traditional Chinese family, I spent most of my childhood in an old Chinese building. The exquisite shape and the harmonious colors around the building appealed to me deeply and it was an enormous satisfaction that I can sit down in the yard and draw every extraordinary corner of this house. This memory exerted a profound impact on me and maintained an irreplaceable place in my mind despite the building finally has gone with the replacement of a high rise.
Initially influenced by the Chinese traditional cultural, I was always enthralled and surprised by the abundant connotation of the ancient Chinese architecture. The research in Mar, 2006 to an old village called Zheng’s House, where is famous for its distinctive structure, impressed me intensely. Despite the deep disappointment that there are too many new buildings lacking proper planning and being unharmonious with the surroundings, my group members and I still have found a lot in the special structure. The 17 big old buildings, connected by bridges, are rare in the history of Chinese architecture. For this I gave a lecture with my classmate Hu at school (the photo of this lecture is in my Portfolio CD, folder “Zheng’s House”) 5 month later when I was told that the buildings of Zheng’s House have got a fire, nearly disappeared, I was shock and found it significant to re-plan these historical villages in an advanced approach .
My hunger to know more about the different architectural styles in different places led me to immerse myself into the study of architecture. A book about the Gothic Churches in Germany first stimulated my interest in Gothic, which has its most unique characteristics of the expansive windows. With the use of the ribbed vault, the whole shape of the Gothic buildings is designed magnificently and the pressure of the walls is relieved on the other hand. From the interior structure, the vertical composed by the repeated high windows and walls led to a strong feeling of grandeur in the Gothic buildings especially some churches like St Peter's Cathedral and Milan Cathedral. I also found that the flying buttress may also have a significant effect on supporting the whole building apart from the decoration. Having read some books about the development of the architecture in Europe, and the springing up of neoclassical style in United Stats also gave me a brief idea about the history of the architecture.
As a spree victim of photography and travel, I have found that these two things have affinity with architecture. Photography has taught me to design the roofline in my photos which is significant in the design of architecture and city planning. Every shot can be a treasure practice of the design and planning since I have to consider the composition of my photos seriously.
To be a traveler is a part of my dream. As is said that “Now you are footloose.” in the movie “Brave Heart”, it’s really an enjoyment that I can get freedom from the appreciation of the different styles of architecture in different places that allows me to expand my perception of architecture and to foster a independent and creative way of thinking where the rules and the convention seem to be superfluous. The trip to Tibet has given me a clear idea about the influence of topography on architectural style. Lying on the tableland where is full of giant mountains could be a good explanation of the mountainous structure of Podala Palace.
Being a basic principle in the architecture studios, co-operation constitutes a critical aspect of the personality of an architect. My working experience as a commissary in charge of publicity, which involved the decoration and the design of the big board in the back of the classroom, gave me a further understanding of this quality. The monthly change of the theme of the big board enables me to pass my enthusiastic and ideas to others. Hard as the job was, I really appreciated the process that my classmates spent a lot of time helping me with discussing and drawing. After I designed a sketch on the computer and printed it, my classmates and I did more research and experiments about structure, colors, artistic and cultural references, etc, which could make our work unparalleled, and after the final plan was decided, we finished it together. Through this way, the work designed by us got first prize almost every month (usually 3 or 4 classes can get the first prize among all the 14 classes).
With the dissatisfaction of the knowledge under the syllabus, I dedicated plenty of my spare tome into the activities at school where gives me an environment to abundant my knowledge and show my talent without boundaries. Being the president of Web Society allows me to foster an ability of management steadily with the organization of various activities in the society. Since it’s pivotal for a president to stimulate and maintain the passion of the members, I insisted on organizing the society party monthly and giving my members a fresh feeling every time and the latest activity called “Design Diary” , which is aimed at collecting inspired design works from my schoolmates, has come to a great success.
My high school study has given me a stable foundation in mathematics and physics while my abundant activities beyond the syllabus has helped me to broaden my horizon and expand my knowledge in the different fields especially the architecture. As an all-around student, I consider it important to develop an independent and self-assured approach to apply the rules that govern the subjects into the practice which could avoid myself becoming stereotype-oriented. That’s why I paralleled my extracurricular activities in my curricular study constantly. Depending on this principle, I have not only finished 7 courses with the score of A which means excellent but also acquired a plenty of knowledge upon the syllabus.
It’s an exciting thing that I can come to the university of McGill , get in touch with the advanced ideas and opinions and fasten my dream with these precious knowledge. With my pleasure I can write this essay to get your gorgeous attention to my achievement, and it must be a great honor for me if this can get your affirmation.
