In the film The Interpreter, Nicole Kidman stars as Silvia Broome, a United Nations interpreter and an expert in an obscure language, whose life is turned upside down when she overhears a plot to kill a much hated African dictator, just days before his appearance at the UN.
The movie may depict a highly unlikely event in the life of a professional interpreter, however,in an increasingly globalised world, people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds meet every day to discuss an array of business, political, legal and technical issues. Professional conference interpreters work in this exciting environment playing a vital role to facilitate multilingual communication at the highest levels of business and government.
The University of Western Sydney will offer an advanced professional degree in Conference Interpreting at its Bankstown campus beginning in 2008.
The Master of Conference Interpreting course caters to fluent bilinguals who wish to obtain the theoretical background and acquire the high level skills necessary to practise as professional conference interpreters. It aims to equip students with training in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
Comprising eight units of study, the course is suitable for practicing interpreters accredited with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, (NAATI), or equivalent qualifications, who wish to further develop their skills in order to work in the national and international conference interpreting arena.
